I noticed today that former New York Mets and Long Island Ducks pitcher Alay Soler is playing winter ball in Puerto Rico for the Criollos de Caguas.
In 2006, the New York Mets signed Soler who was a defector from Cuba and fast tracked him to the major leagues. He was utter disappointment for the Mets with 2-3 record and 6.00 ERA in eight starts. Soler did not make the post season roster that season and was released in 2007.
In 2008, Soler tried to revive his career by coming to Long Island but again he struggled with a 4-5 record, and 6.22 ERA in 16 games.
After the 2008 season he retired from baseball, but made a brief comeback in 2009 pitching seven games with the Newark Bears.
